A Unique Burial Tradition in Andhra Pradesh
In the village of Chitti Jayapuram, located in Andhra Pradesh, the local customs dictate that the deceased are buried rather than cremated, with their cause of death inscribed on their tombstones. This practice is rooted in an ancient prophecy that associates burial with safeguarding against famine.
However, the village faces a pressing issue as the cemetery begins to fill up, a concern that weighs heavily on the newly elected village head, Apoorva, portrayed by Keerthy Suresh. She encounters fierce resistance from local figures like the self-proclaimed stud Madhu and the ambitious Bheemayya, both of whom challenge her authority.
Aporva's Bold Proposal
In a bid to address the space crisis, Apoorva proposes a radical idea: to switch from burial to cremation. This suggestion elicits a dramatic reaction from the villagers, with one person fainting on the spot. To add a twist, she organizes a lottery for those who are nearing death, hosted by a flamboyantly dressed entertainer.
Chinni, the gravedigger, hopes his mother will be among those selected in this unusual lottery.
A Comedy of Traditions
The film, titled Uppu Kappurambu (Salt and Camphor), delves into themes of death, disposal, and tradition, blending these serious topics with a comedic flair. Directed by Ani IV Sasi, the film is now available on Prime Video, featuring a screenplay by Vasanth Maringanti that is both humorous and exaggerated.
The film's slapstick style may take some time to adjust to, as every character in the village displays a unique eccentricity. As the narrative unfolds, the film cleverly critiques outdated traditions, caste hierarchies, and the quest for equality.
Subtle Messages Amidst the Laughter
Through the chaotic events surrounding the graveyard, the film subtly addresses progressive themes, highlighting Chinni's low social standing and the condescending treatment of Apoorva due to her gender. The villagers' adherence to antiquated beliefs and the petty politics at play create a backdrop for the story.
Both Apoorva and Chinni find themselves marginalized in a community resistant to change, where solidarity is often fragile.
A Talented Ensemble Cast
The film features a vibrant ensemble cast, including Keerthy Suresh, Suhas, Rameswari Talluri, Babu Mohan, and Shatru, all of whom contribute to the film's lively atmosphere. Additionally, a host of supporting actors bring to life the quirky residents of Chitti Jayapuram.
Despite its lengthy runtime of 135 minutes, Uppu Kappurambu effectively extracts humor from the typically somber subject of death, showcasing a community that plans for the future with unexpected enthusiasm.
